On Saturday, June 2nd, the weekend of the national Jubilee celebrations, we will be opening at lunchtime for a Diamond Jubilee lunch followed by our show, and again in the evening for a fabulous three course dinner, followed by the show.

With most shows sold out, we have calculated that we will be serving over 7,000 cups of tea and 3,500 cream scones in Her Majesty’s honour. A few hundred yards of bunting will also be put into service, as we transform the music hall into an exciting rain-free street party venue! There will be themed food, Pimms on the drinks menu and marvelous royal Jubilee prizes to be won, including our very special limited edition commemorative mug which has been produced for Brick Lane Music Hall.

Our 2012 Brick Lane Music Hall Souvenir Programme, available for sale at the shows, also marks the Royal occcasion. A special Diamond Jubilee edition, it features exclusive Royal stories from our artists and includes articles on the Queen and the Royal Variety Performance, a prize quiz, and lots more!

On Saturday, as well as our evening show, Brick Lane Music Hall performed in Trafalgar Square as part of the Mayor’s St George’s Day celebrations. The Square was transformed into an English Country Garden and Brick Lane Music Hall provided suitably English entertainment!

Due to the popularity of the shows this year, we aim to expand the run in 2013, developing a series of shows to mark the occasion.

As part of the London Development Agency’s recent Heritage Scoping Study of the Royal Docks area, the building has been re-assessed and the decision has been made to upgrade its status to a more distinguished II* listing. This is in recognition of its significance as one of Teulon’s major works, its power as a piece of architecture -“embodying the High Victorian Gothic at its most restlessly original” – and its exemplary restoration after fire damage in 1981. English Heritage acknowledged the care and consideration taken by Brick Lane Music Hall to preserve the integrity of the building and noted the compatibility of its use as a music hall with the architect’s original vision.

“The conversion by Brick Lane Music Hall has been sensitively done. The inserted partitions, stage equipment, etc, are reversible, and respect the basic structure and feel strangely appropriate in the context of Teulon’s theatrical High Victorian interior.”

The decision was also made to award the War Memorial Grade II listing status. Not originally part of the church, the Memorial was moved to the site in 1991. Brick Lane Music Hall was responsible for the restoration of the Memorial which is now at the centre of the local community’s Remembrance Sunday Service each year. English Heritage considered that the Memorial now “fully merits inclusion on the list at Grade II as a poignant reminder of The Fallen from both world wars”.

Brian Walker and Michael Topping have been busy with a visit to a care home this week, taking music hall entertainment out a local centre in North Woolwich.

Their previous outing was to a home in Gillingham, where their activities co-ordinator was kind enough to write: “A big ‘thank you’ to Brian and Michael who gave us a wonderful ‘old time’ experience. I know the residents in their own way all enjoyed the singing and joking (and a bit of dancing). The carers and family members had a great time too. This kind of entertainment is vital for the stimulation of our residents and long may it continue.”

Thanks to all our customers who enable us to continue this work. If you know of a care home who may like to book a show, please put them in touch.

2012 promises to be a brilliant year for Brick Lane Music Hall. We opened our doors in February 1992 in London’s famous Brick Lane, from where the music hall takes its name. We moved to our current home in Silvertown in 2004 and will be celebrating our 21st year in style. We kick off with a New Year’s Eve Party! Not just any New Year’s party, this one takes place on Saturday 7th January and we invite you to join us for this all-star black tie gala evening, hosted by the founder of Brick Lane Music Hall and impressario Vincent Hayes. His guests will be music hall favourites Paul James, Julie Paton, Andrew Robley and Ian Adams.
